Community College Division

  • First Place - Henna Artist and Studio - College of San Mateo - Silicon Valley Region - $1, 250, a Crowdfunding Marketplace booth at the Global Crowdfunding Convention and the opportunity to pitch during the Startup Live Crowdfunding event and a business explainer video*
  • Second Place - The MamaMoon Postpartum Hotel - Irvine Valley College - Orange County Region - $750
  • Third Place - Jelly, Tali & Associates LLC - College of San Mateo - Silicon Valley Region - $500

  • First Place - Insulin Buddy - Saint Francis High School - Silicon Valley Region - $1, 250 + business explainer video*
  • Second Place - Nocogo - Murrieta Valley High School - Inland Empire/Desert Region - $750
  • Third Place - GoBar - James Logan High School - East Bay/North Bay Region - $500

The "Get a Taste of Success" Business Plan Pitch Competition provides an opportunity for high school and community college students to develop entrepreneurial skills necessary to succeed in business. There were two divisions for competition; one for high school students and one for community college students.

The competition has three rounds:

  • The first round consisted of ten regional competitions across the state where participants submitted a two-minute elevator pitch video and ten slide PowerPoint presentation describing their business idea. 
  • The second round is the state-wide competition and consisted of one college and one high school finalist from each region. 
  • The final round allowed the top three teams from across the state for each division who were invited to give live pitches to a panel of judges via livestream on May 6th.

  • A Crowdfunding Marketplace booth at the Global Crowdfunding Convention in Las Vegas on October 15-17, 2016 and the opportunity to pitch during the Startup Live Crowdfunding event at the Convention ($1,300 value).
  • Up and Running Video is offering a 1-2 minute ‘explainer’ video for your business ($825 value)
    • Including Scriptwriting (if needed)
    • Hours of HD Videography (will travel within a 50-mile radius of 92010)
    • Editing/Motion Graphics (up to 5 revisions)
    • One 1-2 Minute Video
    • 2-month turnaround

    • Including Scriptwriting (if needed)

Rules

Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled in a California Community College within the last six months to be eligible to participate in the Community College Division
  • Must be enrolled in a California High School to be eligible to participate in the High School Division

Criteria:

  • For the regional competitions, participants must register online and upload a two minute Elevator Pitch Video and a 10 slide PowerPoint Pitch describing their business idea by 5 pm on April 8th, 2016. The top team from each region in each division will be invited to go on to the statewide competition.
  • The submissions will be reviewed (using a scoring rubric) by a team of experts reading the slide content only and not text held within the notes section.  Also, please keep slide titles the same since the judges are going to be using a scoring rubric based on each slide.  Furthermore, student peers will be allowed to judge videos for "fan favorite" as business faculty and teachers will be given the opportunity to make the review of pitches part of class projects or assignments.
  • The top three teams from across the state for each division will then be invited to give live pitches to a panel of judges and live audiences around the state on May 6th, 2016 Teams will be given ten minutes (2 minute introduction using their elevator pitch video plus 8 minutes live presentation) to pitch their business plan. Following each pitch, there will also be a five minute Q&A session where teams can respond to questions by the panel of judges. The Competition Finals will be broadcast live via videoconference to ten regional sites across the state where live audiences will be also have an opportunity to score the pitch presentations.
