The Block by Block Challenge is a three-month social competition that is open to social innovators, grass roots community efforts, non-profits and other organizations that have the ability to sustainably deploy innovative approaches to solving critical barriers to food security in their communities.


GuideWell Innovation is partnering with Synapse to launch the challenge in four Florida regions (Central Florida, North Florida/Panhandle, West Coast Florida and South Florida) with regional prizes totaling $6,000. Finalist from all regions will be invited to the Block by Block two-day forum, October 16-17, at Guidewell Innovation Center in Orlando's Lake Nona Medical City to present their ideas and compete for the grand prize of $20,000.

Required Criteria for Regional and State Challenge

GuideWell Innovation is looking for innovative solutions related to food insecurity that have teams dedicated to long-term success of the venture with a business model that supports growth and a strong desire to take their idea to the next level. Solutions should address one or more of the following key areas: Availability of food resources, Access to food resources, Utilization of nutrition education, and Resilience against shocks to food systems in households.

Block by Block applications are scored against pre-determined criteria that evaluates the viability and potential of your solution by a selection committee composed of GuideWell executives, industry experts, and potential funders. 

Program Timeline, Costs and Important Dates:

Phase 1

June 10 - August 15 
Challenge window open. Create your approach and submit to us.

Phase 2

August 15 - September 1
Regional pitch competition participant selection by judges. Twelve finalist from each region will be invited to pitch their solution for a chance to win $2,000 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize.  The 3 finalist from these regional events are then eligible to pitch at the statewide pitch event in Orlando for a chance to win $20,000 and to meet funders, and other solution providers in the state. 

Phase 3

September 9 - September 12
Finalist will attend regional pitch competitions around the state to pitch their solution to GuideWell executives, foundations, other solution providers, and subject matter experts. 

Phase 4

October 16, 2019
Statewide final pitch event will occur in Orlando at the GuideWell Innovation Center in Lake Nona. The 12 regional finalist will have the opportunity to pitch for a chance to win $20,000.

Note that companies selected for the program are responsible for all travel and lodging costs to Orlando for the showcase event in October.
