THE CLIMB | Jake Jabs Business Plan Competition is a business development event series for collegiate startups based in Colorado. Hosted by the Jake Jabs Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado Denver, THE CLIMB is designed to help student entrepreneurs transform concepts into viable businesses through education, mentorship, networking and financial support. THE CLIMB celebrates 16 years of guiding entrepreneurial thinkers, empowering them to blaze their own trail and pushing them to reach their peak potential.

Rules

The Spring 2018 Business Plan Competition is open to all university and community college students in the state of Colorado. At least one person on the team must qualify as a collegiate student.

Teams must qualify by the below:

  • The startup must be a concept to under 2 years old (Official Company Tax ID number to receive award money.)
  • Sales and revenues must be a total of $0 to under $100,000. 
  • The concept being submitted cannot have received any seed/angel/venture capital (VC) funding before application deadline on February 28th, 2018.
  • Teams selected for Pitch Night are required to have at least one team member physically present at Pitch Night on April 26th, 2018.
  • The six finalists chosen for Pitch Night will be REQUIRED to submit a full business plan, due April 9th, 2018. 
  • Winners must form an appropriate business entity, if they have not done so previously, no later than May 30th, 2018. Proof of business entity must be shown to the Jake Jabs Center team by this date in order to receive prize money. 

Submissions Requirements:

  • Complete online ReviewR application form
  • Submit 60-90 second Pitch Video through ReviewR
  • Submit 3 Page Executive Summary through ReviewR
  • Submissions and edits will be accepted until 11:59pm (MST) February 28th 

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Q: Does my video have to be of professional production quality?
    • A: NO. Videos can be animated, recorded from computer cameras, records from smartphones, etc. Do not worry about the production quality of your video as much as your pitch clarity and creativity.
  • Q: Can I change my entry after submitting my application?
    • A: YES. Applications may be edited and changed as many times as needed up to the application closing deadline.
  • Q: How many team members have to qualify?
    • A: ONLY ONE team member must qualify under the collegiate terms. The business must qualify under all other terms.
  • Q: Is there an entry fee?
    • A: NO 
  • Q: What is required for the Tax ID Number?
    • A: Concepts/Companies must have or apply for an official tax ID number (TIN) before receiving award money. Winners must form an appropriate business entity, if they have not done so previously, no later than May 30th, 2018. Proof of business entity must be shown to the Jake Jabs Center team by this date in order to receive prize money. 
  • Q: Can my concept/business team apply again if we competed in a year prior?
    • A: If you/your team applied for THE CLIMB in a previous year, you/your team can compete under the same concept/business as long as you did not make the top finalists pitch round (and meet the above qualifications). Teams that did apply and make the top finalists pitch round can compete again, BUT must submit a new concept/business (and meet the above qualifications).
